## Purpose

Help Tanya choose an Alberta supervised home education provider that protects the family's child-led, hybrid homeschool/unschooling philosophy while keeping the kids eligible for Alberta home education funding and reimbursement.

## Current Direction

Best fit is likely a parent-directed supervised home education program, not a regular online school program.

This should preserve:

- Parent choice over curriculum, methods, schedule, and learning style.
- Child-led projects and unschooling-friendly records.
- Portfolio evidence instead of rigid daily seatwork.
- Access to funding/reimbursement through a supervising school authority.
- Formal teacher evaluations without turning the home into school-at-home.

## Alberta Funding Rules To Protect

- Funded path: supervised home education through a willing public, separate, francophone, or accredited funded independent school authority.
- Non-funded path: notification only, not supervised by a school authority.
- Parents must notify and be accepted by an associate board or accredited funded independent school before the September count deadline to receive funding.
- Alberta says students are not eligible for home education funding if the program is accepted after September 29.
- Parents are responsible for planning, managing, providing, evaluating, and supervising the child’s course of study.
- The supervising authority must arrange at least two formal evaluations each school year by certificated teachers.
- Evaluations include a review of the student portfolio and recommendations.
- Reimbursements must line up with the Home Education Regulation and Standards for Home Education Reimbursement.
- Parents have up to two years to access the parental portion of home education funding, using the correct school-year form.

- Do you support unschooling or mostly curriculum-based home education?

## Forms And Documents We Will Need

For each child:

- Legal name and birthdate.
- Alberta address and proof of Alberta residency if requested.
- Parent/guardian contact information.
- Previous school/program information, including BC registration history if requested.
- Home Education Notification Form for supervised home education.
- Program plan or education plan.
- Any learning support/medical/vision notes that matter for the plan.
- Portfolio evidence system.

For program plan:

- Family philosophy: child-led hybrid homeschool/unschooling.

## NACI / Indigenous Status Follow-Up

Tanya said Travis's brother and mom recently got NACI status in BC and sent programs Travis needs to fill out so he may get status, and then the children may access related programs or funding.

Important: "NACI" needs clarification because public search results do not clearly identify a BC Indigenous status program by that acronym. It may be a family/community-specific acronym, a nation/association acronym, or a typo/short-form for a status or citizenship process.

Needed from Tanya/Travis:

- Exact acronym meaning.
- Name of Nation, association, registry, or program.
- Copies or screenshots of the forms Travis's family sent.
- Eligibility chain: Travis -> children.
- Whether the children must apply after Travis, or can be included on his application.
- Whether benefits apply while living in Alberta.
- Education-specific supports, tutoring, cultural programs, homeschool funding, sport/activity supports, or reimbursements.

Do not assume eligibility until forms and program rules are reviewed.

## WISDOM Working Enrollment Plan

Decision as of July 10, 2026: Move forward with WISDOM as the first-choice provider unless a major blocker appears. Main 2026-2027 focus is Navie and Mayzie. Ledger can remain light, natural, play-based preschool unless WISDOM confirms an easy reason to include him.

### Why WISDOM Fits The Steward Family

- WISDOM is built around traditional parent-directed home education.
- WISDOM says parents retain control over what is taught, how it is taught, and when it is taught.
- Their language supports informal, flexible, practical-world learning instead of school-at-home.
- They use an Education Program Plan, but describe it as flexible and changeable through the year.
- They assign a facilitator who can help with planning and implementation.

### WISDOM Funding Amounts For 2026-2027

- Grades 1-12: $928.03 per funded home education student.
- Kindergarten: $464.01 per funded kindergarten student.

For the Steward kids, assuming funded acceptance:

- Navie, Grade 7: $928.03.
- Mayzie: was in Grade 1 for 2024-2025, should be treated as Grade 2 for 2025-2026, and Tanya confirmed she should be planned as Grade 3 for 2026-2027. She turns 8 on July 26, 2026, so she will be 8 for September 2026 planning and should fall under the grades 1-12 funding category if registered.
- Ledger: born March 28, 2022; turns 5 on March 28, 2027. For September 2026 planning he is 4. Tanya is not worried if he is not eligible and does not want Ledger to be a major enrollment focus this year.

### WISDOM Deadlines To Protect

- Aim to submit the Education Program Plan by August 31 if possible.
- WISDOM says September 29 is the final date to enroll before the funding deadline, including approval of the program plan.
- Do not treat September 29 as the working deadline. Steward family target deadline: August 15-31.
- EFT form should be submitted before the end of September if Tanya wants direct deposit reimbursement.
- Purchase orders begin around late September/September 22 if the plan is approved.
- Receipt submissions can happen throughout the year.
- Final receipt submission deadline is around May 31.

### WISDOM Sign-Up Steps

1. Create/access WISDOM Parent Portal account.
2. Submit application/notification through the parent portal.
3. Upload each child’s Canadian birth certificate or other proof of Canadian citizenship.
4. Create an Education Program Plan draft for each child.
5. Wait for WISDOM welcome email/phone call.
6. Get matched with a facilitator.
7. Revise/finalize EPP with facilitator.
8. Receive acceptance letter.
9. Submit EFT/direct deposit form for reimbursements.
10. Start tracking receipts, portfolio evidence, activities, and EPP updates.

For each child:

- Birth certificate or proof of Canadian citizenship.

- How much detail do they want in a Grade 7 EPP?
- What portfolio evidence does the facilitator prefer?
- Are swimming lessons, volleyball, indoor sports, YMCA/open gym programs, gymnastics, recreational facilities, homeschool groups, co-ops, museum memberships, library programs, field trips, tutoring, and online learning subscriptions reimbursable if listed in the EPP?
- Can program/activity receipts be reimbursed if purchased before final acceptance, as long as they fit the EPP and reimbursement rules?
- Does WISDOM have Calgary-area social events, parent contacts, or family gatherings?

### Private Admin Boundary

The family may be applying for Alberta Health Care cards and may later pursue status/NACI-related family paperwork and programs. Do not include these details in the first WISDOM inquiry unless WISDOM specifically asks for information that makes them relevant. Handle those streams separately to protect privacy and reduce confusion.
