# Kids Activities Options Board

Status: first scout, July 14, 2026. Verify live again before registering.

Current registration playbook: `docs/fall-2026-recreation-registration-game-plan.md`.

## Current Family Activity Priorities

- Navie: swimming confidence, volleyball, library/youth programs, YMCA/open gym, weekend social opportunities.
- Mayzie: swimming confidence, gentle movement/gymnastics or active play, library programs, friendship/social confidence.
- Ledger: play-based outings, library story time, indoor play, playgrounds, social exposure.
- Absolute September priorities from Tanya/Travis: swimming, volleyball, and gymnastics. Open recreation and drop-ins are backups if structured program spots, cost, or schedules do not work.
- Activity assignment: volleyball is specifically for Navie; gymnastics is specifically for Mayzie; swimming is for Navie and Mayzie first, ideally at the same time. Ledger can join swimming only if a non-parented age-4 beginner class is available and appropriate; otherwise Tanya will swim/play with him while the girls are in lessons.
- Navie may resist swimming lessons, but Travis and Tanya consider them non-optional because she does not yet know how to properly swim and needs confidence/safety.

## Parent Constants Still Needed

- Budget per kid per season: unknown; prioritize best value and subsidy/funding options.
- Maximum drive time from Cranston/Seton: target 20 minutes or less, with exceptions for high-quality multi-purpose locations.
- Days/times that are off-limits.
- Schedule preference: weekdays preferred; any day possible; best window 10:00 AM-6:00 PM, 6:30 PM latest; avoid late evenings.
- Whether YMCA membership is financially realistic.

## Funding / Subsidy Path To Check Before Registering

1. **City of Calgary Fair Entry / Recreation Fee Assistance**
   - Approved July 25, 2026 per Fair Entry notification email in `tanya.steward3@gmail.com`.
   - This unlocks reduced City recreation rates and is also requested by some YMCA/KidSport processes.
   - City registered classes, lessons and day camps: children/youth save 90% on programs under $100; for programs over $100, save 90% up to $100 per program; up to four programs or $250 total in 12 months.
   - Online registration should use the email from the Fair Entry application; the subsidy should apply automatically in Live and Play if available.

2. **YMCA Calgary Financial Assistance**
   - YMCA offers financial assistance for membership, programs, and camps.
   - YMCA Calgary asks for City Recreation Fee Assistance Card or Fair Entry approval with Recreation Fee Assistance for individuals over 2, or other accepted proof/partner letter.

3. **KidSport / Every Kid Can Play**
   - Helps with sport registration fees for eligible kids.
   - Current public sources describe up to $350 per eligible child per year through KidSport/Every Kid Can Play.
   - Calgary KidSport may request proof such as Fair Entry or other adult household documents.

4. **Jumpstart**
   - Canadian Tire Jumpstart individual child grants may cover eligible registration/equipment costs up to $300 per child per year.

5. **Metis / First Nations / Status-related supports**
   - Needs clarification on what Travis is applying for: First Nations/Indian Status, Metis citizenship, or another status/residency process.
   - Otipemisiwak Metis Government Sports and Recreation Grant is publicly listed for Metis youth ages 5-17 who are citizens, up to $500 reimbursement with proof/receipts.
   - First Nations Health Consortium can support Indian Status registration in Alberta. Benefits and child eligibility depend on the actual status/citizenship path.

## First Options To Consider

### City Live and Play Categories Tanya Found

Use these as possible program lanes after funding/account setup:

- Gymnastics: https://liveandplay.calgary.ca/REGPROG/public/category/browse/Gymnastics
- Sport Hub: https://liveandplay.calgary.ca/REGPROG/public/category/browse/SportHub
- Martial Arts: https://liveandplay.calgary.ca/REGPROG/public/category/browse/MartialArts
- Dance/Hip Hop: https://liveandplay.calgary.ca/REGPROG/public/category/browse/DanceHipHop
- Rock Climbing: https://liveandplay.calgary.ca/REGPROG/public/category/browse/RockClimbing
- Skating: https://liveandplay.calgary.ca/REGPROG/public/category/browse/Skating
- Swimming: https://liveandplay.calgary.ca/REGPROG/public/category/browse/Swimming
- Swimming lesson level quiz: https://www.calgary.ca/parks-rec-programs/swimming/quiz.html

Must-do: have the girls complete the City swimming lesson quiz before choosing/registering for swimming lessons.

### Swimming: YMCA Calgary, Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton

- Best for: all kids, especially Navie and Mayzie confidence.
- Why it fits: close to Cranston/Seton area; swim lessons and other programs in one facility; strong "two or three birds with one stone" potential.
- Registration: Fall 2026 programs visible Aug 4, 2026. Member registration Aug 11, 2026 at 8:00 AM; general public Aug 25, 2026 at 8:00 AM. Program dates Sept 7-Dec 13, 2026.
- Exact links: registration instructions `https://www.ymcacalgary.org/register-and-dropin/registration-instructions`; program portal `https://ymcacalgary.my.site.com/`; swimming lessons `https://www.ymcacalgary.org/programs-and-services/swimming/swimming-lessons`.
- Need: set up YMCA portal, check financial assistance, decide whether membership makes sense, or use program registration/drop-in.
- Tanya's July 25 schedule target: Monday-Friday daytime while public school is in session, ideally 10:00 AM-2:00 PM and especially 11:00 AM-1:00/2:00 PM. Avoid late evening classes, especially winter night driving.
- Tanya's July 27 location rule: from 52 Cranarch Common SE, YMCA searches must start with Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton. South Health Campus YMCA is allowed mainly for climbing because it is just north of Seton. Remington YMCA in Quarry Park and Shawnessy YMCA are backups only if they create a much better stack than Seton. Do not widen to far-away YMCA branches without explicit approval.
- Ledger note: YMCA Calgary lists parent participation for children 18 months-3 years in Bubblers, and a separate preschool swim program for ages 3-5. This suggests a 4-year-old can likely be in a preschool lesson without parent participation, but confirm in the chosen class details before registering.
- Girls' level notes: YMCA Learn to Swim is for ages 6-14. Mayzie, age 8 by September, likely starts in an early Learn to Swim level after the YMCA level finder/quiz. Navie, age 12, can also use Learn to Swim/teen-appropriate beginner options depending assessment.
- Hot tub/watch plan: YMCA Seton schedule lists a Family Hot Tub and says children under 8 must be within arm's reach of a guardian in appropriate swim attire. This suggests Tanya and Ledger may be able to use the family hot tub during open/public swim times if admitted, but verify that the hot tub is open during the girls' lesson time and that lesson observers may enter the aquatic area with drop-in/member access.

### Swimming: City of Calgary Lessons

- Best for: structured swimming if suitable pools/times are available.
- Registration: fall registration opens in August; some City swimming lesson registration begins Aug 18 and some begins Aug 27.
- Need: Live and Play account before registration morning.
- Risk: popular classes can fill quickly.
- Ledger note: City of Calgary has Swim for Life Preschool 1 for ages 3-5 with no prerequisite. This appears to be the likely beginner level for a 4-year-old who has not taken lessons. Confirm whether parent participation is required in the specific class listing; City preschool levels are separate from parented toddler/baby lessons.
- Girls' level notes: City Swimmer 1 is beginner/no prerequisite for kids and teens. City Youth 1/2/3 is for ages 12-17 with no prerequisite and may fit Navie if she needs a beginner teen class. Mayzie likely starts with Swimmer 1 unless the City swim quiz suggests a different level.

### Swimming: Southland Leisure Centre

- Best for: swimming lessons near Southcentre area, potentially easier lesson availability, and family-friendly pool features.
- Why it fits: Tanya heard it may be easier to get into lessons there; likely within a reasonable drive; close to Southcentre Mall for errands/parallel kid management.
- Registration: City of Calgary fall swimming lessons for Southland/Acadia/Canyon Meadows show an August registration window; verify exact date before registration.
- Need: Live and Play account ready.
- Parent/Ledger swim cost note: Southland's 2026 listed single visits include adult $15.30, child 6-12 $6.85, preschool 0-5 free, family $31.10, and parent & preschooler $9.00. Verify which admission type applies while girls are in paid lessons.
- Hot tub/watch note: Southland's hot tub page says the hot tub overlooks the wave pool and parents can relax while keeping an eye on kids. It also says pools are not available for public swimming during swimming lessons, so Tanya must confirm whether she and Ledger can enter as parent/preschool drop-in while the girls are in lessons or whether only viewing is allowed during those lesson blocks.

### Swimming / Multi-Use: Trico Centre

- Best for: swimming lessons, pool, hot tub, drop-in fitness, skating/gym-type family activity.
- Why it fits: one-stop family wellness centre with pool, waves, hot tub, fitness/classes, free parking, and multiple activity types.
- Need: verify drive time, lesson availability, fall registration, and fee assistance options.
- Parent/Ledger swim cost note: Trico family swim listing shows $15 for 2 adults and 2 kids under 18, with hot tub, waves, rain curtain, and rope swing open. Verify whether this applies during lesson times or only family swim blocks.

### Library: Calgary Public Library

- Best for: reading, social, STEM, Code Club, Math Quest, Reading Buddies, family outings.
- Cost: free with library card.
- Need: get library cards and identify closest useful branches/programs.

### Volleyball: ACE Volleyball Academy

- Best for: Navie beginner/recreational volleyball, possibly Mayzie later depending age/fit.
- Current sample found: ages 8-10 and 11-12 programs, Sunday afternoon sessions, costs listed around $89.99-$171.99 plus service fee depending session length.
- Need: verify location/drive and current availability before presenting to Navie.

### Volleyball: ACE Calgary Summer League 2026

- Status: Tanya found active registration details and wants this program if Navie is eligible.
- Program dates: July 27-August 31, 2026.
- Registration deadline: July 24, 2026 at 11:00 AM.
- Days/time: Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:00-5:30 PM.
- Session dates: July 27, July 29, August 5, August 10, August 12, August 17, August 19, August 24, August 26, August 31. Skips August 3 stat holiday.
- Location: ACE Athletic Centre, 4848 52nd Street SE.
- Cost: $214.99 plus service fee, includes T-shirt.
- Eligible birthdates: September 1, 2013-December 31, 2015.
- Eligible gender: female.
- Fit notes: This is development practice plus game-style touches, teams of 10, practice Mondays and games Wednesdays. It fits Navie's volleyball priority if her birthdate is inside the eligible range.
- Funding route: because TeamLinkt requires immediate non-refundable payment, contact ACE before paying if the family cannot risk losing the fee. ACE's financial assistance page says they work with families on custom payment plans and may provide in-house help for eligible candidates. Ask ACE whether they can hold the spot, provide a payment plan, accept KidSport payment directly, or advise how to apply for KidSport without paying first.
- Contact status: Tanya sent ACE an email on July 14, 2026 asking how to coordinate KidSport/Jumpstart/payment plan/in-house financial help before paying the non-refundable fee.
- KidSport status: Tanya completed the KidSport Calgary sport funding application for Navie's ACE volleyball program. Local confirmation/application PDF found in Documents as `NAVIE_STEWARD_KidsportApplication_2026-457790.pdf`. Application number appears to be 2026-457790.

### Volleyball: Volleydome / Other Calgary Clubs

- Best for: camps or beginner skill development.
- Need: verify location, age fit, schedule, and cost.

## Current Best Shortlist For September Setup

1. **First choice: YMCA Seton**
   - Try for Navie and Mayzie swimming at the same time.
   - Check whether Mayzie gymnastics or active sport programs are available at Seton in the same season.
   - Ask the desk whether Tanya and Ledger can use the Family Hot Tub during the girls' lesson time with drop-in or assisted admission.
   - Fall 2026 swim lesson preview opens August 4, 2026. Member registration opens August 11, 2026; general public registration opens August 25, 2026. Programs run September 7-December 13, 2026.
   - Best likely lesson lane: YMCA Learn to Swim for ages 6-14. Navie and Mayzie can both fit the age band, but they may need different levels after assessment.
   - July 27 funding check: Tanya's YMCA membership is active, and YMCA member benefits include early registered-program access and member discounts. YMCA Financial Assistance was submitted and verified in person per local state. Use YMCA assistance first for YMCA programs, then consider KidSport/Jumpstart only if a registered sport program still has a meaningful balance.
   - July 27 schedule rule: YMCA Fall 2026 exact times are not visible until August 4. On preview day, search Seton first for swim lessons, art, youth sport/core/fitness, FlowRider/drop-in swim, and any climbing option. If Seton cannot stack at least two kids, compare against Southland instead of forcing the YMCA plan.
   - July 27 YMCA activity search menu for August 4: swimming for all three, climbing for all three age bands if South Health Campus or another realistic branch has workable times, Mayzie/Navie art, Navie youth sport conditioning, basketball, badminton, soccer, skating, and FlowRider/open swim as a Seton add-on rather than a standalone registered program.

2. **Best City backup: Southland Leisure Centre**
   - Try for Navie and Mayzie swimming at the same time through City Live and Play.
   - Southland has a parent/preschool admission category and a hot tub that overlooks the wave pool, but lesson-time pool access must be confirmed.
   - Southland is also useful because it has multiple rec options in one place.
   - Best likely lesson lanes: Navie may fit Youth 1 if using the teen stream for ages 12-17 with no prerequisite; Mayzie likely starts in Swimmer 1 if the swim quiz does not place her higher.
   - July 27 funding check: City Recreation Fee Assistance can reduce most child/youth City programs by 90%, with limits. The subsidy should apply automatically in Live and Play when using the same email as the Fair Entry application.
   - July 27 concrete Fall 2026 City listings found:
     - Ledger: Rock climbing - kids age 4-5, Southland, Sundays 9:00-9:45 AM, Oct. 4-Dec. 6, $92.25 before subsidy, ID 132351.
     - Ledger: Gymnastics - preschoolers age 3-4, Southland, Sundays 10:15-11:00 AM, Oct. 4-Dec. 6, $105.75 before subsidy, several duplicate course IDs showed spaces.
     - Mayzie: Gymnastics - kids age 7-8, Southland, Tuesdays 5:40-6:40 PM, Sept. 29-Dec. 1, $157.50 before subsidy, ID 132062; or Thursdays 5:40-6:40 PM, Oct. 1-Dec. 3, $157.50 before subsidy, ID 131690. Later 6:50-7:50 options exist but are not a good fit for Tanya's evening preference.
     - Mayzie: Rock climbing & knots - kids age 7-9, Southland, Sundays 11:00 AM-12:00 PM, Oct. 4-Dec. 6, $121.50 before subsidy, ID 132358.
     - Navie: Volleyball beginner age 11-12, Southland, Saturdays 10:15-11:15 AM, Sept. 19-Nov. 28, $112.50 before subsidy, ID 132421. A Monday 7:15-8:15 PM volleyball team-prep option exists, but it is later than Tanya prefers.
     - Navie: Basketball shooting age 12-15, Southland, Sundays 11:00 AM-12:00 PM for two sessions in October or November, $22.50 before subsidy. This is a short add-on, not the main sport.
   - Best City stack if Tanya wants one Southland activity morning: Sunday 9:00 Ledger climbing, 10:15 Ledger preschool gymnastics if choosing gymnastics over climbing, 11:00 Mayzie climbing or Navie basketball add-on. This is useful but not perfect because Mayzie's true gymnastics options are Tuesday/Thursday early evening, and swimming registration is a separate August 25 window.

3. **Best family-feel backup: Trico Centre**
   - Good pool and hot tub setup, family swim options, and swim lessons.
   - Verify whether financial help applies and whether lesson times allow Tanya/Ledger pool access.
   - Strong backup because it has a warm beach-entry pool, waves, hot tub, and swim lessons, but it is separate from City Live and Play/Fair Entry and needs its own fee-help check.

4. **Volleyball search lane for Navie**
   - YMCA Seton sports programs first if available.
   - ACE Volleyball and Volleydome as structured backups.
   - Keep it beginner/recreational or academy-style, not high-pressure competitive.
   - July 27 update: Navie is already in ACE volleyball for July 27-August 31, Mondays/Wednesdays 4:00-5:30 PM. For September, treat volleyball as "optional continuation" only if she likes ACE and the schedule stays sane. City Southland has beginner volleyball, including Saturday 10:15-11:15 AM for age 11-12 and Tuesday evening 7:15-8:15 PM for age 11-12.

5. **Gymnastics lane for Mayzie**
   - First check YMCA Seton only if a true gymnastics/tumbling-style class appears in the YMCA portal, but public YMCA pages emphasize youth sports, climbing, skating, basketball, soccer, badminton, and sport conditioning rather than a dedicated gymnastics stream.
   - July 25 update: climbing is now the preferred YMCA substitute to check before private gymnastics, because it builds confidence, strength, body awareness, and coordination. Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton does not list an indoor climbing wall in its branch amenities, but YMCA Calgary lists climbing programs and nearby South Health Campus YMCA has a climbing wall a few blocks north of Seton. Check YMCA portal on August 4 for preschool/youth climbing programs and daytime availability.
   - Strong local private option: Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics, 104-3442 118 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB T2Z 3X1, phone 587-349-2004. This is likely the local "man's name" gymnastics place Tanya remembered.
   - Funding: Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics lists KidSport funding on its parent information page and says KSG has partnered with KidSport to provide assistance to qualifying families. Apply through KidSport Calgary for Mayzie once the class/program details are selected.
   - City of Calgary backup: City gymnastics classes are introductory, include floor/bars/beams/trampolines/vault, and fall program preview opens July 23 with registration July 28 at 6:00 AM.
   - July 25 Fair Entry update: make City/Southland the first true gymnastics attempt because Recreation Fee Assistance can reduce City registered programs and admissions. Southland Leisure Centre has gymnastics equipment and City gymnastics classes for ages 3-4 and 5-12, which fits both Ledger and Mayzie. Also watch Southland gymnastics drop-in, which requires a booked appointment and waiver.
   - July 27 update: Ledger has visible Sunday Southland preschool gymnastics options. Mayzie has visible Southland gymnastics options on Tuesday or Thursday at 5:40-6:40 PM. This is the best subsidized gymnastics route, but it does not stack naturally with Ledger unless Tanya is okay with a separate evening trip.
   - Timing rule: do not book Mayzie gymnastics on Monday or Wednesday from 4:00-5:30 PM while Navie's ACE Summer League is active, July 27-August 31, unless the locations/times are realistically paired by Tanya.
   - Kyle Shewfelt best-fit trial: Kids Night Out Camps are the best short try-it option if a Saturday spot is open, because they run 6:00-9:00 PM for ages 4-12 and do not conflict with Navie's ACE volleyball. Tanya may try taking both Navie and Mayzie together as a low-commitment test of the facility.
   - Kyle Shewfelt best-fit ongoing class: Pre-Teen Gym for ages 8-11. The site specifically describes it as the beginner starting point for an 8-year-old who wants to try gymnastics without being grouped with younger 6-year-olds. It is structured, co-ed, 1.5 hours, no prerequisite, 1:8 ratio, and uses floor, vault, bars, rings, beam, tumble track, and trampoline.
   - Kyle summer camp caution: summer camp is a good energy outlet, but Week 4 onward may conflict with Navie's ACE volleyball because camp pickup is 4:00 or 4:30 and Navie's volleyball begins at 4:00 on Mondays/Wednesdays at a different SE location.

6. **Skating lane for Mayzie**
   - Possible option found by Tanya: U9 Learn to Skate, Tuesdays 2:45 PM, 4 classes, $77.36.
   - Possible option found by Tanya: Private Skate Lessons, Mondays 1:00 PM, 3 classes, $147.15.
   - Combined subtotal: $224.51.
   - Timing note: these do not conflict with Navie's ACE volleyball time of Mondays/Wednesdays 4:00-5:30 PM, but Monday private skate plus Monday volleyball transport may make Mondays busier.
   - Funding note: compare against swimming/gymnastics priorities before committing, because Mayzie's main priority is still gymnastics and swimming.
- Current status: saved as possible options only. Tanya has not registered yet and understands they may book up while waiting for funding clarity.

## Email Catch-Up Notes From 2026-07-25

- Calgary Flames Sports Bank emailed July 24: KidSport approval qualifies the family for free gently used sports equipment. Reply with number of kids and sport(s) needed to get an outfitting appointment. Likely reply: one child, volleyball gear for Navie, plus ask whether knee pads/shoes are available.
- City of Calgary emailed July 23: fall general programs preview July 23 and registration begins July 28 at 6:00 AM online, with virtual waiting room opening 5:30 AM. City swimming lessons preview August 13; Southland/Acadia/Canyon Meadows registration August 25 at 6:00 AM.
- ACE emailed July 21: U12/13 Summer League is 4:00-5:30 PM at ACE Athletic Centre, Mondays and Wednesdays, skip August 3. Parent email says July 27-August 26, but the live ACE page lists August 31 too.
- Sparkle Squad cleaning reminder July 25: cleaning appointment Monday, July 27, 2026 at approximately 9:00 AM. Cleaner will text about 24 hours before; Tanya must reply at least 12 hours before or the clean can be cancelled. Estimated clean from thread: Dana, about 5 woman-hours, about $180.

## Southeast Gymnastics Shortlist After Fair Entry Approval

1. City of Calgary / Southland Leisure Centre
   - Best first attempt because Fair Entry/Recreation Fee Assistance can apply.
   - Location: 2000 Southland Dr. SW.
   - Fit: Ledger can use preschool gymnastics age 3-4; Mayzie can use kids gymnastics age 5-12.
   - Register/search: https://liveandplay.calgary.ca/REGPROG/public/category/browse/Gymnastics

2. Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics
   - Best close private gymnastics option in southeast Calgary.
   - Location: 104-3442 118 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB T2Z 3X1.
   - Fit: GymKids Four for Ledger if age/independence fit; Pre-Teen Gym or age-appropriate beginner class for Mayzie.
   - Funding: check KidSport/Jumpstart or provider support. Fair Entry does not automatically discount private providers unless they are a listed partner.

3. Gymtastics Gym Club
   - Close southeast/south option.
   - Location: 160-7260 12 St SE, Calgary, AB T2H 2S5.
   - Fit: gymnastics/tumbling/trampoline programs for kids; verify exact age/time fit.
   - Funding: ask about KidSport/Jumpstart/provider assistance.

4. Pegasus Gymnastics East
   - Southeast option, farther east but still SE.
   - Location: Unit 18, 11166 42 St SE, Calgary, AB T2C 0J9.
   - Fit: preschool/kindergym and recreational options; verify exact schedule.
   - Funding: ask about KidSport/Jumpstart/provider assistance.

## Current Holding Pattern

- As of the night of July 14, 2026, activities are on pause until funding replies come in.
- YMCA Seton is the preferred registration hub because it is close to home and most likely to stay realistic/consistent for Tanya, especially once weather changes.
- Southland Leisure Centre remains the best City backup because it has strong swim/recreation options and is still reasonably close, though not as convenient as Seton.
- Once funding is clearer, possible next registrations include YMCA/Seton programs, Southland/City swimming lessons, Mayzie gymnastics, skating, climbing, music, and other Seton/Southland-friendly options.
- Tomorrow's likely check-in: check for ACE reply, Fair Entry status, YMCA financial assistance next step, and whether to continue KidSport/Jumpstart applications.

## Next Scout Questions For Tanya

1. Confirm off-limits days/times.
2. Confirm whether weekday evenings are okay, or if weekends/daytime are preferred.
3. Confirm whether YMCA membership is possible if financial assistance lowers the cost.
4. Confirm whether Tanya is willing to wake early for City swim registration if needed.
5. Clarify Travis's status path: First Nations/Indian Status, Metis citizenship, or another process.
